A small number of runners turned out for the first annual Grand Rapids Urban Trail 5k Challenge hosted by the Grand Rapids Community College cross country team Tuesday night at Calvary Baptist Church.
“I was hoping for twenty so I am a little disappointed with only 11 runners,” said race director and GRCC head cross country coach Matt Sicilia. “I am excited to get this started and hopefully we can build this up in the future.”
The race took place on the Ken-O-Sha Trails. A winding course that got quite narrow at times with some sand and logs to jump over.
Zachariah Vruwink of Hudsonville had the best overall time, finishing at 18:39.
“It was a fun race, super different than most of the races I run,” said Vruwink. “It was way more extreme than any cross country race I have done.”
Sarah Danner of Grand Rapids was the top female finisher with a time of 20:39.
“I had a lot of fun,” Dunner said. “It was twisty with a lot of turns so I did not have a lot of time to think about running.”
All the proceeds from the race will support the GRCC cross country team.
