Considering Valentine’s Day is possibly the most cliche holiday of the year, it is very hard to think of uncommon gifts for your special person.

From chocolate, to roses, to heart shaped ANYTHING it is really hard to make your Valentine feel like they are special and not receiving the typical gift. However, there are seven, fun, non-cliche Valentine’s Day gift and date ideas for you to take into consideration this year.

  1. Movies

Take your Valentine out to a movie instead of buying them something. Spend some social time with them and see a new flick. There are several big movies coming out on February 10: ‘Fifty Shades Darker,’ ‘A United Kingdom,’ ‘Running Wild,’ ‘John Wick Chapter 2,’ and ‘The Lego Batman Movie.’

2. Dinner at home

Instead of spending a good deal of money at a fancy dinner for your Valentine, in a loud, public atmosphere, maybe having dinner at home would be a more personal Valentine’s Day date. Make your Valentine their favorite meal, spend some time trying to accomplish it together, and feel more comfortable in the privacy of your own home.

3. Buy tickets for a future concert of sporting event

With the opening of 20 Monroe, and being so close to venues like The Van Andel Arena and The Intersection, buying tickets for an event in the future is always an option. These venues offer many different events from Juicy J, to Def Leppard, and even a Grand Rapids Griffins hockey games, which makes your options endless for a fun date for your Valentine.

4. Three course dinner date

This year, don’t do the typical dinner date. Instead, do the three course dinner date, where you eat an appetizer at one restaurant, the main course at a different one, and finish off with dessert at another place. This way you get to try out new places and have a different type of dinner experience with all the options we have in downtown GR.

5. Go to a local brewery (21 and over)

Everyone knows  that GR was voted “Best City USA” several years back. Therefore, with all the local breweries right in our downtown district, go beer tasting this Valentine’s Day. If you are an avid craft beer drinker, this would be a fun, different date to do this year.

6. Giftcards

If you have absolutely NO IDEA what to get your Valentine, you can never go wrong with a gift card. Being in college, we all don’t have that much money, so maybe this year get them a gift card to their favorite store, restaurant, or even a gas card. It sounds weird, but if your valentine is broke, a gift card would be appreciated.

7. Go to the beach

Living in Michigan, you are so close to many inland lakes. Therefore, do something different and free this year for Valentine’s Day.  With only being 45 minutes from either Grand Haven or Holland, this year go watch the sunset and walk the beach on this romantic holiday. Get a coffee to warm up, and spend some time looking at the beautiful ice and the pretty dunes. This would be a very cheap date and a fun, romantic time.
