Today at 10 a.m., a Grand Rapids donut shop opened its doors to a massive line of people waiting to taste the new $2 “Flamin’ Hot Cheeto Doughnut.”
The newest recipe from The Donut Conspiracy, 1971 East Beltline Ave., NE, is spicy and
savory, consisting of a yeast-raised doughnut topped with torched pepper jack cheese, crushed Cheetos and a special made in-house queso.
“It’s a different doughnut,” said Brooke Lavender, owner
of The Donut Conspiracy. “It’s a sweet bread with a taco/pizza kind of thing that’s really good.”
The general consensus of the customers in line was that they were excited to try out the new spicy doughnut, but once they tried them, there was a split in opinion.
“I didn’t expect there to be a slice of pepper jack cheese, and I didn’t think I would like it,” said Kristin LaVelle, 36, of Grand Rapids. “But that was actually very good.”
“I feel like the doughnut did not have a lot of flavor,” said Dan Noe, 31, of Grand Rapids. “The doughnut part was just dough, so if they flavored that with hot sauce, jalapenos – something, it would’ve been better.”
“You know, it was fun to try once, but I’m not sure I could’ve eaten another one,” said Chris Noe, 31, of Grand Rapids. “But if they ever made something like it in the future, because I am a gimmicky eater, I’d be here in a heartbeat.”
While the Flamin’ Hot Cheeto Doughnut was only available today, Lavender said it’s up to her Facebook followers whether they’ll keep it or not. The Donut Conspiracy also has three brand new doughnuts in the works. What they are and if they’ll all make the shelf remains a mystery.
The Donut Conspiracy, located off the East Beltline near Knapp’s Corner, is open from 6 a.m. – 8 p.m. Mon. through Sat., and 6 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Sun.
