LZ Granderson’s stories may be considered controversial by some, but that is not his intention. He says he “tries to avoid using words and phrases that may prevent people from thinking.” He says he is “more focused on telling a story and giving his opinion” than being controversial.

When Granderson speaks at this month’s Diversity Lecture Series he will be speaking about a subject that is important to him. His articles have included the presence of gays in the locker room and the truths and lies of reverse racism.

He says one point of his lecture will be, “Don’t allow labels to determine your outcome.”

LZ Granderson is a well respected award-winning journalist from Detroit. Granderson is a former columnist for the Grand Rapids Press and still makes his home in the Grand Rapids area. He writes a weekly column for CNN.com as well as contributes for ESPN. He was named journalist of the Year by the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association and was a finalist for the 2011 Online Journalism Award for commentary.

The Diversity Lecture Series is intended to give insight and understanding of multicultural issues to the West Michigan Community as well as recognize the trailblazers in the civil rights movements and those who challenge mainstream assumptions.
