Grand Rapids Community College’s annual Welcome Week kicks off Sept. 9. Free food and activities will be available from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 9-12, in the Juan Olivarez Student Plaza (formerly Bostwick Commons). Vendors will be serving up elephant ears on Monday and Tuesday, ice cream on Wednesday and hot dogs on Thursday. The plaza will be bustling with activities that include giant yard games, root beer pong and inflatables. Student clubs will be manning their booths on Tuesday and Wednesday, ready to inform anyone interested on how to join.
Welcome Week isn’t just about getting free eats and playing games. Student Activities is aiming to break the stigma that community colleges don’t have much to offer in campus involvement and to assure students that they can still have the “college experience” while attending GRCC. Information on various organizations, on-going campus activities and student employment will be available throughout the duration of the week.
“People get into the swing of just going to class and then go home”, said Emily Smitter, President of the Campus Activities Board, “We want students to know right away that there are many ways to get involved here at GRCC”.
