Raiders golf takes first at Ancilla Invitational

By Travis Devlin

The Grand Rapids Community College golf team took first place with an overall score of 301 at the Ancilla Invite in Plymouth, Ind. GRCC scored 301with edging out the weekend competition that included a team from Muskegon Community College, which came in a close second with an overall score of 313. Oakland Community College finished third with a score of 325, followed by Ancilla and Jackson College.

GRCC’s Anthony Conaway and Zach Bialik each shot 74 to lead the Raiders. David Thompson carded a 76 and Kurt Sprague shot an 83. “Yesterday was a very solid win,” Conaway said. “This team has a lot of fire power.

However, despite the high praise, Conaway noted that they have room for improvement. “We didn’t play our best and won yesterday,” he said. Coach Bruce Vandenbeldt was also very pleased with the victory and the continued success this year’s team is having. “We’re really pleased with the direction we’re heading, but we hope to improve,” Vandenbeldt said. “Our strength is we’re a very deep team.”

The players have been practicing really hard this year. Grueling four to five hour practices have translated onto the course with many individual improvements and a string of tournament victories.  The Raiders look to continue their winning ways next Thursday, Oct.10 at the National Junior College Athletic Association National Championship Fall Preview Tournament back in Plymouth, Ind.

“That’s what we need to do if we want to reach our goal of a National Championship,” Conaway said.
