Freshii, A New Healthy Cafe in Downtown GR

Freshii is a unique restaurant located in the McKay Tower on Monroe Ctr. It’s tucked away next to Biggby and can be difficult to spot at first. I was intrigued when I heard that it was somewhat of a fast food chain that served fresh soups, salads, burritos, smoothies, and more.

I’ve always found it difficult to find somewhere quick, healthy, and filling to eat when I’m downtown, so I thought I’d give it a try.

I went at lunch time and was worried that I wouldn’t be able to find parking on the street, however I got a spot pretty close. The decor is very modern and simple, with fresh greens and whites on the walls. You just go up to the register, order, and they make it right there. All of the menu choices sounded great. There’s burritos and salads, all of which you can make into a green wrap, which means that it will be wrapped in lettuce instead. You also have the option of creating your own salad, choosing the toppings and proteins. Just be careful as it can get a little pricey if you pile in too many ingredients. Substitutions are very easy, such as substituting kale or quinoa in the bowls instead of rice.

I picked all of my ingredients and had them make my own salad and my friend ordered the falafel bowl, a summer special they are running. The food came out fast and we found a seat. Everything looked great and really fresh-no wilted lettuce or past-ripe veggies. The only complaint my friend has was the Srirachain her bowl was spicy, which you can’t really blame Freshii for.

What’s really great, especially for students or employees downtown, is that you can order on their website and either get it delivered or pick it up. It beats the lunch time rush. Freshii also has a mobile app that you can load money on and use your phone to pay at the register. By using this feature, the app tracks your purchases, leading up to a free meal. You can also earn, what they call, ‘veggies,’ by doing different tasks such as recycling or exercising. Talk about an incentive to stay healthy.
