The Grand Rapids Community College golf team had to win a sudden-death playoff to narrowly defeat Wayne State University at the Lawrence Tech Invite on Monday.
The Raiders went head to head with their opponent after 36 holes left the teams tied. Match play ended after GRCC shot 13 strokes to Wayne State’s 14 on the first hole.
“Hang around long enough until good things happen,” Head Coach Bruce VandenBeldt said.
Sophomore Zach Bialik led the Raiders, shooting a 73,74 on 36 holes. He came in second out of all the players for the 12-teamfield. His teammate, sophomore Drew Pennington, came in second for the Raiders after tallying a 74,76, tying for fifth place overall.
“We just gotta get better every day,” said VandenBeldt. “That’s how we approach every day in practice.”
The Raiders are scheduled to tee off next at 10 a.m. Friday for the Muskegon Invitational.
