By Max De Leeuw – Collegiate Staff The Grand Rapids Community College Volleyball team fought its way to win the fifth set 15-13, sealing 3-2 victory over Jackson College Thursday night. “It really just came down to the ball dropping on each side because both sides were fighting and both sides were playing well,” Jackson Head Coach Leigh Swihart said. The Raiders started off the night by narrowly taking the first set 26-24. The skirmish continued in the second set where the score was reversed in favor of the Jets. GRCC got into a rhythm and won the third set 25-15 only to lose in the fourth 21-25. “It’s always fun when two teams are playing well because then it just comes down to who’s going to make one or two more plays at the very end,” GRCC Head Coach Chip Will said. Rosalyn Wyse led the Raiders with 12 kills. Shelby Ruffner and Dacey Cook each added 10 of their own. Jamie Barrows had a team-high 32 assists and Audrey Wyse led GRCC with 21 digs. GRCC was able to get the job done offensively even though Jackson took advantage of some holes in the Raider’s defense. “We’ve got to get better blocking,” Will said. “That’s normally one of our strengths and that really kind of hurt us tonight, but it showed that we can play different styles of ball and be successful.” GRCC will host Ancilla College at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 14 in the Ford Fieldhouse.
