Today the Grand Rapids Community College annual Student Leadership Awards Banquet was held at the Eberhard Center on the Grand Valley State University Pew Campus.
Over 20 awards were given out to student leaders and one adviser was recognized for his leadership skills with students.
The crowd made up of students, administration, faculty and staff filled the banquet room.
Arielle Brown, President of Student Alliance, and Brandon Sinclair, President of Campus Activities Board, served as the mistress and master of ceremonies. Nancy Forrest, Mathematics Professor at GRCC, gave the keynote address.
Sinclair was pleased that so many people made it to the event.
“The whole entire room was pretty much filled up,” Sinclair said. “We had a lot of deserving candidates for awards and we had a really great turnout today. I think everybody was quite happy with the set up.”
Sinclair, who has not won a GRCC Student Leadership Award before, won the Benham Service and Civic Engagement award.
“I was really shocked,” Sinclair said. “Just because this past year I’ve been able to work beside all these people … A lot of those people that were up there with me were my close friends.”
Brown, who has been a part of planning for the event since December, said it was successful because of the love and support in the room.
“As long as were doing something good for our school and our community and we’re able to celebrate that, it’s going to always be a success,” Brown said.
