An open seat on the Grand Rapids Community College Board of Trustees is expected to be filled at a special meeting Oct. 5.
The term, once held by Dr. Richard Ryskamp, expires Dec. 2016. Ryskamp died Sept. 8 of cancer.
Applications are currently being accepted until 5 p.m. Sept. 24 in the board office at room 202 of the GRCC Administration Building.
Those wishing to be appointed must be a registered voter and live within the GRCC district.
The board will hold interviews Sept. 28 and 30.
“We’re hoping to get somebody long term that would run again,” said Misty McClure-Anderson, executive assistant to the president and board liaison.
Anderson said that because the board is required to appoint a new trustee within 30 days of a seat opening, the trustees haven’t discussed what kind of person they are looking for to fill the spot.
Ryskamp was elected in 2009 as a “critic” to the board.
“He really was a great addition to our board, even though a lot of times he didn’t agree on everything, he made them think and talk,” Anderson said.
