The Grand Rapids Community College Raider defense came up big with a huge stop at the end of regulation to seal a 62-61 win over the Mid Michigan Community College Lakers Wednesday night.

GRCC, playing without one of their leaders, Kristen Schubring, had a slow start against MMCC Wednesday night.

“We finally made a play when we needed it the most,” coach Ray Kimball said following the win.

The Raiders were led by Deiona Rogers’ who had 15 points, eight rebounds and six steals on 6 of 11 shooting. Reagan Cross chipped in with 14 points, three rebounds and three steals on 5 of 12 shooting.

The Lakers gave the Raiders quite a scare when they tied the game up from the charity stripe with less than two minutes remaining. Coach Kimball was forced to use his final timeout.

Rogers made the shot that gave GRCC a two-point lead, and with great ball pressure, the Raider defense would not allow the Lakers a shot attempt on the final possession of the game to seal the victory.

The Lakers were led by Erika Wendling who had 18 points and 13 rebounds on 7 of 11 shooting. Melissa Benchley added 11 points and 5 assist of her own.

The Raiders will be at home again when they face Hope College at 1 p.m. Nov.14 at the Ford Fieldhouse.
