Grand Rapids Actors’ Theatre is set to premiere the musical “Dogfight” on Thursday at Grand Rapids Community College’s Spectrum Theater.
“Dogfight” is a musical based loosely on the 1991 film of the same name by Nancy Savoca and Bob Comfort starring River Phoenix and Lili Taylor. The story is about six marines who decide to play a prank on unsuspecting “ugly” ladies during their last night before shipping out to Vietnam on the eve of the JFK assassination.
“It is a story of lost innocence and the discovery that war may not be a romantic idea,” said Fred Sebulske, director of Actors’ Theatre. “I hope the audience will enjoy the music and the way the story is told.
“Rehearsals are going extremely well,” Sebulske said. “The show will hopefully make the audience laugh, maybe cry and certainly think about what it means to send youngsters into war.”
The performance starts at 8 p.m. and will run today through Saturday, Dec. 5, Thursday, Dec. 10 through Saturday, Dec. 12 and Thursday, Dec. 17 through Saturday, Dec. 19. Tickets are $28 for the public and range from $10-$22 for students and can be purchased at the Actors’ Theatre box office online or by phone at (616)234-3946.
