Celebration Cinema North’s proposal to sell alcoholic beverages, as well as several other changes was approved by the Grand Rapids Planning Commission on Feb. 11. The proposal includes a 16-seat bar with tables and seating for 40 people within the lobby.
“With this appeal, Celebration Cinema will be able to sell alcoholic beverages during normal business hours, within the lobby bar and inside each theater,” said Steve VanWagoner, Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations at Celebration Cinema.
The theater’s previous liquor license allows for alcohol consumption during special events only, such as beer, wine and spirits.
Celebration North is expecting to open a full bar by this summer.
This will be the fifth Celebration Cinema location to acquire an alcohol permit. The current locations with alcohol permits are Celebration Cinema-Carousel in Muskegon, Celebration Cinema in Portage, Celebration Cinema in Mount Pleasant and Studio C in Okemos, East Lansing.
At the Mount Pleasant location a local beer named from Mountain Town is being featured as well as several other beers, including Founders and Angry Orchard. They also serve Copa De Vino single wine glasses. Beer is $5 per can and wine is $7.
On Feb. 1, Celebration Cinema changed the age requirements for R-rated movies to not allow children under 6 years old to be admitted after 6 p.m.
“It is about the environment,” said VanWagoner. “In the interest of adults being comfortable.”
