With the Flint water crisis going from a local tragedy to a crisis with resources coming in on a global scale, Grand Rapids Community College’s Asian Student Union has decided to do its part to help.

“We had a bunch of water bottles for another fundraising event, so we started with that,” said Susana Fok, 18, ASU secretary. “It’s not going to be enough, so we want to encourage other students to donate so we can buy more and drive them down to Flint.”

In collaboration with Student Alliance, ASU is hosting a collection table in front of the GRCC Bookstore on the first floor of the Student Center from noon – 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12.

“Humans should help other humans, no matter who or where they are,” said GRCC student Katia Timm, 20, who was volunteering her time at the donation table last Thursday.

If students aren’t able to donate water bottles, they can also donate money. The club plans to use the money to buy water bottles in bulk before traveling to Flint.

The ASU encourages students and faculty who can spare even just a penny to the cause to stop by before Friday.

“Water is a necessity for everyone,” Fok said. “It’s a basic need.”
