Students at Grand Rapids Community College may have noticed something different around campus the last couple of weeks.
New solar-powered tables have been placed around campus, and are best spotted by their big, blue umbrellas.
“Two tables were part of the Olivarez Commons site furnishings package,” said Jim Van Dokkumburg, Director of Facilities at GRCC. “They are all-season and provide wired and wireless charging of devices, and night lighting after dark, all powered by solar panel-generated energy. The two tables were added as an alternate to the project when pricing came in under budget.”
The tables feature power outlets, USB outlets, and wireless charging stations. They also have a LED light feature, and produce ambient light at dusk. The tables are built out of aluminum and recycled plastic.
They can also seat up to eight people and are ADA accessible.
Other furniture installed in the Bostwick commons this summer includes new picnic tables, benches and garbage cans.
