ArtPrize is alive and well throughout Grand Rapids, including a lively lobby display by nine artists at the Grand Rapids Community College Spectrum Theater.
Out of the diverse mix of two and three dimensional pieces, two really stand out.
The first is a three dimensional mixed medium piece by Donna Marie Buchanan titled “Treasure in Earthen Vessels.” It features faces painted onto a hollow shell of tree bark, while the roots and the inside are covered in gold.
“The faces that are painted on the outer shell of bark represent a range of ages and emotions,” stated Buchanan in her artist statement. “A reminder that no matter the state of a person’s outward condition, created in God’s image, is of great value.”
Another intriguing piece on display in the lobby is “Flight in Wind” by Stanley Skopek. “Flight in Wind” is a sculpture of a hummingbird made out of musical instruments.
This is the fifth sculpture Skopek has entered into ArtPrize. Previous entries include “Dawn of Chimes” and “Field of Brass.” Each of his pieces take upwards of a year to make and can go through many revisions.
The ArtPrize hours for the Spectrum Theater lobby are from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
