A man who stole a car from a Grand Rapids Community College parking ramp is at large.
The GRCC police sent out an email to all students Tuesday morning with photos of the suspect.
“The suspect stole multiple sets of keys from victims’ belongings while they were attending a nearby church,” the email stated. “The suspect then entered the parking ramp, located the vehicles, attempted to steal one car and fled in a second. The unoccupied vehicle was later recovered in the city of Wyoming.”
The keys were stolen from Fountain Street Church, according to GRCCPD.
“To our knowledge it was drivable and not damaged,” said GRCCPD Chief Rebecca Whitman. The car was stolen between 10:45 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Feb. 26.
Whitman said there have been “a significant number of people” leaving valuable items like cell phones, purses, backpacks and laptops in their cars.
“Don’t leave your valuables in your car period and if you do at least try to keep them out of sight,” Whitman said.
Whitman added that students should be taking care of their car keys because of how easy and unnoticeable it is for someone to find a car with just a set of keys and a key fob.
“It’s really important that people protect their keys like they would protect their vehicle,” Whitman said.
Students who may know any information about the suspect are being asked to contact campus police at 616-234-4010 or Silent Observer at (616) 774-2345.
