For students who are pursuing a degree in education, there are scholarship opportunities that the Grand Rapids Community College Education Department is offering. Students can receive up to $1,600 for the annual “Teachers of Tomorrow” scholarships.
“The intent is to support students going into the field of education,” said Tricia Siegel, coordinator of the scholarship program.
“The scholarships are intended to help education students financially, which will allow them to work less hours at a job and focus more on volunteering in the classroom setting and spending more time on school work. Education programs can be challenging and the scholarships can hopefully help students achieve their dream.”
“The scholarships are provided by individuals in the community as well as by some past and present faculty from GRCC.” Siegel said.
All of the scholarships are awarded through the GRCC foundation.
“As the coordinator, I think it is important to make connections with our students in the Child Development/Education Department,” Siegel said.
Once the scholarships have been awarded, there will be a dinner each fall to recognize each recipient and ive them an opportunity to connect with the faculty in the education department.
On top of the dinner, the scholarship recipients also get invited to a “Making Connections” Breakfast in February which is sponsored by the GRCC Foundation. This is a great opportunity for students to meet various donors and show their appreciation. Students also get to hear stories from past recipient winners on how the scholarship has changed their life.
Students can apply for these scholarships for online. The deadline to apply is March 15.
