At Monday’s Grand Rapids Community College Board of Trustees meeting, Trustee Bert Bleke announced that he will be resigning.
Bleke has been on the GRCC board since May of 2011. Previously, Bleke was the Superintendent of Grand Rapids Public Schools.
Bleke’s term was set to end in December 2018, but he will be resigning and retiring on June 8.
“We’re going to move,” Bleke said. “We’ve decided to move to Wisconsin to be closer to our grandchild.”
Bleke said that he hopes the new trustee will have an open mind.
“I believe that we (GRCC) have to do a better job with student success,” Bleke said. “It can be improved by paying close attention to consistent quality teaching throughout the entire system.”
GRCC is now taking applications for the soon-to-be vacant spot on the board.
The new trustee will be appointed by the GRCC board and only serve the remainder of Bleke’s elected term that expires in December 2018.
The applicants must be registered voters and live within the district’s boundaries. Letters and resumes of applicants should be submitted to the Board of Trustees Office by 5 p.m. on Friday, June 9.
The interviews will be conducted by the board on Wednesday, June 14. The new trustee chosen by the board will be announced at the regular GRCC Board meeting on Monday, June 19.
