The Grand Rapids Community College Athletic and Communication Departments announced Friday morning that GRCC will host the National Junior College Athletic Association Region XII basketball tournament starting in 2019.
According to the press release, the winning bid package is a result of the partnership between GRCC and the West Michigan Sports Commission. The WMSC touted renovations of Ford Fieldhouse and Gordon Hunsberger Arena as well as Grand Rapids’ accessibility, affordability and attractions.
“We’re not just proud to show off GRCC — we’re showing off our entire community to the thousands of student-athletes and spectators who will be guests on our campus and in West Michigan,” GRCC President Bill Pink said in the release. “This will be a spectacular opportunity, and we’re grateful for the hard work of our partners to make this happen.”
GRCC’s bid package included letters of support from Grand Rapids Mayor Rosalynn Bliss and Grand Rapids Convention and Visitors Bureau President Doug Small.
The $8-million Ford Fieldhouse renovation project, which includes updated locker rooms, air conditioning and updated training areas, is scheduled to begin in May and is set for completion in late fall. The tournament will be one of the first major events in the Fieldhouse post-renovation.
“We are very excited to put on a fantastic tournament for the student-athletes who work so hard to make the Regional Tournament,” GRCC athletic director Bill Firn said in the release. “We stress teamwork on the court, and bringing the tournament to GRCC is the result of teamwork with partners throughout our community.”
