Drake responds to blackface photo
Full disclosure: I am white. I do not have room to comment on this fragile subject, but I am here to tell the story.
If you haven’t already heard, rapper Pusha-T and Drake have had a bit of a feud over the years, and the most recent escalation came when Pusha-T released a diss track titled “The Story of Adidon.”
In this track, Pusha-T goes in on Drake accusing him of fathering an illegitimate child, and he even zeros in on his producer’s multiple sclerosis. Although all of that is enough to shock anyone, the real headline was the cover art – an unearthed picture of Drake in blackface.
Obviously, this stirred up a lot of controversy and conversation on Twitter. Many were calling for the “Degrassi” golden boy to be cancelled, while others believe it’s been taken out of context from a photo series that deals with racism and Jim Crow in an artistic way.
Pusha-T then continued to drag Drake on Twitter, posting the cover art again with the caption, “Please stop referring to this picture as ‘artwork’…I’m not an internet baby, I don’t edit images…this is a REAL picture…these are his truths, see for yourself.” He then includes a link to the photographer’s website who took the pictures.
The photographer, David Leyes, has cited the photograph as “Drake’s idea” that he just “captured.” There are also screenshots of Leyes saying he was “proud to be a part of a strong statement made by a black man about the f*cked up culture he is living in.”
The photo itself surfaced on Tuesday, but Drake didn’t respond to it until late Wednesday night. In his Instagram Stories, Drizzy defended the meaning behind the photo.
“I know everyone is enjoying the circus but I want to clarify this image in question,” the rapper wrote. “This was not from a clothing brand shoot or my music career. This picture is from 2007, a time in my life where I was an actor and I was working on a project that was about young black actors struggling to get roles, being stereotyped and type cast. The photos represented how African Americans were once wrongfully portrayed in entertainment. Me and my best friend at the time, Mazin Elsadig who is also an actor from Sudan, were attempting to use our voice to bring awareness to the issues we dealt with all the time as black actors at auditions. This was not to highlight and raise our frustrations with not always getting a fair chance in the industry and to make a point that the struggle for black actors had not changed much.”
Footage then emerged of the project that Drake was referring to, although him in blackface is nowhere to be seen.
Kim Kardashian West in the White House?
Is this what the Twilight Zone is like?
Alongside her attorney, Kim Kardashian West was at the White House Wednesday to discuss prison reform with President Donald Trump and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and senior advisor who oversees the administration’s push to overhaul the nation’s prison system.
“Great meeting with @KimKardashian today, talked about prison reform and sentencing,” Trump tweeted alongside a picture of the two in the oval office.
West, who wore a black suit and neon green see through pumps for the occasion, was seen leaving the White House about an hour after she arrived.
West’s main topic of conversation centered around Alice Marie Johnson, a 63-year-old great-grandmother who is serving a life sentence for a nonviolent drug offense. Johnson was convicted and sentenced without parole in 1996.
The meeting has been in the works for some time. Earlier this month she spoke to “Mic” about trying to get a meeting.
“I’ve been in communication with the White House and trying to bring her case to the president’s desk and figure out how we can get her out,” she said. “I would explain to him that, just like everybody else, we can make choices in our lives that we’re not proud of and that we don’t think through all the way.”
West first showed her support for Johnson in October after seeing a viral clip on “Mic” telling Johnson’s stories. She and Johnson have spoken directly, and in a letter to the reality star Johnson wrote, “Ms. Kardashian you are literally helping to save my life and restore me to my family.”
Hours before her meeting, West once again tweeted her support for Johnson. After her discussion, she tweeted again to thank Trump and the White House for their time, and that she is “optimistic” about Johnson’s future.
Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra are reportedly *~DaTiNg~*
On to some happy news, Nick Jonas may have found a lovebug. A source confirmed the couple to US Weekly saying, “They are dating and it’s brand new. It’s a good match and they are both interested in each other.”
Super hard evidence, I know.
On Saturday, the two were spotted attending an LA Dodgers game together. They were “talking really closely and were very smiley and happy,” a fan told US Weekly. Another fan even recorded the two walking in together. Y’all creepy.
The day before, they were also reportedly seen watching “Beauty and the Beast Live” at the Hollywood Bowl, but they tried to keep their appearance low key by going in shortly before it started and leaving right before it ended.
“Yeah, we were on the same table and we already know each other. So he was like ‘Hey, you wanna go together?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, okay, let’s go together.’ It ended up working out,” she told Jimmy Kimmel after the event.
I am so here for it. Hopefully we aren’t just being Paranoid. Ha.
That’s all for this week guys, let me know what you think about all of the drama in the comments below. Ttyl.
