Attempted robbery reported near GRCC’s main campus on Wednesday

An attempted robbery near the intersection of Fountain Street and Prospect Avenue, was reported to the Grand Rapids Community College Police Department at approximately noon on Wednesday, Sept. 26.

According to an email that went out to students, faculty and staff sent by Campus Police Chief Rebecca Whitman, campus police is investigating the incident.

“A GRCC student was walking between the Main and DeVos campuses when approached by the suspect,” the email stated. “The suspect demanded the food the victim was carrying. When the victim refused, the suspect grabbed the victim and began reaching for the victim’s pockets. The victim punched the suspect and fled toward the DeVos campus with no further contact from the suspect.”

The Collegiate reached out to Campus Police but requests for a statement were not immediately granted. It is yet unclear whether the suspect is a GRCC student or if they have since been apprehended.

Whitman’s statement also reminds students to be alert while on campus and offers Campus Police assistance.

“As a reminder, GRCC has a shuttle that operates daily between the two campus locations,” the email stated. “Please avoid walking alone and be aware of your surroundings. Campus Police also offers escorts upon requests.”

To request an escort on campus, dial extension 4010 from any phone on campus or go to Campus Police Headquarters, located at 25 Lyon Street. A GRCCPD officer will meet with anyone needing a police escort to their destination.

The email asks for anyone with any additional information on the incident to contact Campus Police at (616) 234-4910 or (616) 234-4911.
