Guitarist Andrew Bergeron and flutist Carmen Maret, known as Folias Duo, will take the stage on Thursday during the first International Guitar Series concert of the 2018 Fall semester at 7:30 p.m. at Grand Rapids Community College’s Albert P. Smith Music Center, located at 142 Ransom Ave.
The pair, who are husband and wife, will debut their Flute and Guitar Concerto Garita for their audience which was written during their summer and winter retreats to rustic cabins in Canada and Colorado.
Folias Duo is ready to return to GRCC after a 12-year hiatus and are ready to see the new students who are involved in GRCC’s Music Department.
“We’ve been around GRCC for a long time, since 2006, and have been kind of active in the community,” Maret said. “But it’s been a while since we’ve been featured on this series as a duo.”
Accompanying the duo during the concert is GRCC professor and guitarist Kyle Thompson and bassoonist Marissa Peak. For Folias Duo, the chance to showcase their music at GRCC is special.

“It’s great,” Maret said of performing again at GRCC. “We’ve played with a lot of composers and performers over the years and it’s nice to have a big feature of our music. Of course, it’s a whole new group of students every year, it’s a whole new group of people who don’t know us, haven’t heard us, so it’s really nice especially for the students.”
Tickets are still available for the International Guitar Series with prices ranging from $5 for students, $10 for seniors and $15 for adults. For tickets, click here.
