Mia Baila has been obsessed with art since she could hold a crayon. She entered ArtPrize for the first time this year, and she’s been loving every minute of it.
“I have no expectation of winning, I just wanted to be a part of the event,” said Baila, a 67-year-old New York City native. “It’s such an awesome thing–so wonderful for artists. There’s a fantastic energy involved here.”
Baila said ArtPrize made a private Facebook page for the participating artists this year, and everyone has shown immense love and support towards each other making this an experience that Baila says she will never forget.
Baila’s inspiration for all of her artwork is water in any form. Her latest trend has been waves, which are the focus of her “A Tumult of Waves” ArtPrize entry. It took her no longer than a month to create this art piece, and she completed it while working on other paintings in between.
“It’s a companion, a belief system and also a vehicle for improvement,” Baila said. “While I work on it, every painting is a meditation on what comes next.”
Painting nature is calming to Baila, and she hopes to express that energy through her artwork and onto her viewers.
“I’d like my painting to bring a little ‘ocean time’ to the people who see it,” Baila said.
Baila’s acrylic-on-canvas painting can be found in the lobby of the Spectrum Health Meijer Heart Center.
