The Grand Rapids Community College women’s basketball team secured a 73-48 win Tuesday night against the Aquinas College Saints JV squad.
After bringing home a 65-46 win this past Saturday against Alpena Community College, the Raiders continued their winning streak bringing their record to 6-2.
Sophomore point guard Hallee Breimayer talked about the importance of Saturday’s win against Alpena and how it helped give the team a positive attitude for this game.
“Normally after a loss, we’re very down, but having that win helped us have a positive look on the next game,” Breimayer said after the game. “I think what helped was the coaches having confidence in us and talking to us at halftime and saying ‘keep on doing what you’re doing.’”
The team struggled with defense throughout the first three quarters, but was able to pick it up in the fourth. Sophomore Aaliyah Sargent from Cedar Springs said, “Our defense definitely needs to improve every single time.”
The Raiders and Saints battled back and forth throughout the first quarter. The Raiders were able to secure a six-point lead going into the second. The Saints were unable to get ahead in the second quarter leaving the scoreboard 35-26 at half time.
The Raiders brought the heat in the second half, maintaining the lead and outscoring Aquinas 38-22 in the half to finish the game with the 73-48 win.
Head coach Dave Glazier was happy to see his team maintain a consistent lead through all four quarters.
“I was impressed with how we stuck to it at first,” Glazier said. “And what I’ve been hoping they do is when they get a lead, they just keep building it. I was really impressed with just the overall team effort.”
Both the women’s and men’s basketball teams will be in action this Saturday, Dec. 8 against Mott Community College at Aquinas College, located at 1700 Fulton St. E. in Grand Rapids. The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. while the men are scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
