The Grand Rapids Community College softball team kicked off the conference portion of their schedule Tuesday afternoon when they traveled to Centreville, Michigan to play the Glen Oaks Community College Vikings in a double-header.
The Raiders came into Tuesday’s games winless. Like the baseball team, the softball team took a spring trip down south and were roughed up a bit by some upper echelon teams. Tuesday, however, the Raiders came out strong in their Michigan Community College Athletic Association Western Conference opener.
The Raiders swept the two games from the Vikings 14-10 in game one, and 16-3 in a five-inning, game two affair. Alexa Abrahamson and Brooke Klein each picked up their first wins of the season. Andi Chipman had a solo and two-run homer while Maddie Marble added a three-run dinger of her own.
Raiders’ head coach Brian Skudre talked about his team’s performance and praised their offense, but also talked about wanting to improve their focus going forward.
“Biggest factor in the wins was our offense,” Skudre said. “We’ve been putting in a ton of work since spring break and it definitely showed today. One thing we have to work on is keeping our focus for the entire game. It almost cost us the first game. But they rallied around each other and closed the game out with a big win.”
The Raiders are 2-0 in MCCAA Western Conference play and will look to stay unscathed when they host the Lake Michigan College Red Hawks for a double-header on Friday, March 29 at Belknap Park in Grand Rapids. Game one of the double-header is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
