The $8 million renovation of Grand Rapids Community College’s Gerald R. Ford Fieldhouse began in May 2018, and officially reopened on Jan. 21. These changes include a completely new fitness center with state-of-the-art workout equipment, updated locker rooms with more lockers than before, refreshing showers, and more classrooms for increased exercise science classes. The gym has also been revamped to include and more basketball hoops.
After the remodel, the fieldhouse added four additional classrooms. Jodi Gee, head of the exercise science department, is especially excited for this.
“We at the exercise science department are very excited about the new academic classrooms and to introduce new students to our programs,” Gee said.
The fitness center has been rebuilt from the ground up to include new workout equipment and televisions. Maddy Wheeler, a sophomore who is looking to enter the police program, appreciates the convenience the fitness center offers.
“Being on campus all the time can make it hard to make it to the gym,” Wheeler said. “So it’s nice having a place to workout on campus.”
The fitness center is free for any student currently enrolled in classes. Fitness center hours are Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Though GRCC’s aquatic center was not included in the fieldhouse renovations, the pool has also reopened and has open swim hours from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Open swim is free for GRCC students and $3 for community members 18 or older.
A new towel system will soon begin where a towel may be used for $1 per visit, or $10 to get one towel a day for the entire semester. At the time of writing, this system is still in its beginning stages and has not gone into effect.
