While discussing her family life, DeGeneres talked about her parents divorce when she was 13 years old, She talked about how it was hard for her because her father had never had to take care of himself before.
“I kind of had to go take care of him” DeGeneres said. “I would go to his apartment and literally it would be nothing there. In the refrigerator there would be a jar that had this much chocolate milk left in it with a knife that he was stirring it with. It was really sad.”
Meanwhile, DeGeneres said her mother, who had wanted to get the divorce, started dating.
“It was weird” DeGeneres said. “She turned into a kind of different person.”
Eventually, her mother remarried.
“She remarried a very bad man, a very bad man,” DeGeneres said.
During the interview, DeGeneres told Letterman that her stepfather had sexually assaulted her. He told DeGeneres he needed to check her for breast cancer, while her mother was away.
“He told me when she was out of town, that he felt a lump in her breasts” DeGeneres said,”and needed to feel my breasts, because he didn’t want to upset her, but he needed to feel mine.”
After this, DeGeneres’ stepfather had continued to sexually assault her saying he need to check her breasts again.
“He tries to break my door down” DeGeneres said,”and I kicked the window out and ran because I knew it was gonna go more to something.”
DeGeneres said she was reluctant to tell her mom because she wanted to protect her happiness.
“I should never have protected her,” DeGeneres said. “I should have protected myself and I didn’t tell her for a few years. And then I told her and then she didn’t believe me, and then she stayed with him for 18 more years.”
DeGeneres confronted her stepfather as well, who had said she was lying and her mother believed him. Eventually, DeGeneres’ mother left her stepfather because he had changed the story so many times.
DeGeneres told Letterman that she wanted to tell people this story because she felt women needed to feel safe to have a voice and say no.
“It angers me when victims aren’t believed, because we just don’t make stuff up,” DeGeneres said. “And I like men, but there are so many men that get away with so much. It is just time for us to have a voice, it’s time for us to have power.”
