On Saturday, July 13, thousands of people are expected to gather at Calder Plaza in Grand Rapids. The mission? To set a new record for the world’s largest water balloon fight.

This event is from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and free to the public. The water balloon fight begins at 3 p.m. and participants must bring their own balloon. Not only will there be a large balloon fight, but many other games. Included will be a 3-on-3 basketball tournament. To register your team for the tournament you can find tickets on eventbrite. A cash prize will be awarded to the winning team.

There will also be live music, food trucks, fowling (a football bowling pin game), a city wide scavenger hunt, and so much more.

Will Ellermets, 24, of Hudsonville is the CEO and founder of Battle of the Gains, a fitness company focused on helping people overcome battles, whether that be emotional or physical.

“All our friends were trying to make gains,” Ellermets said. “We realized that life was a battle and to overcome everything physically, mentally, spiritually, financially, with relationships and so we started this Battle of the Gains thing in 2016 and then we decided to host an event, we thought we should bring together people in the community to basically come together and celebrate life.”

Ellermets hopes to host this event in cities across the United States and to help put Grand Rapids on the map.

Along with the other events there will also be motivational speakers, or “battle talkers,” such as Dr. Eddie O’Connor, a sports psychologist at Mary Free Bed, and Shelley Irwin, a local radio icon at WGVU. There will be a total of 19 speakers participating.

Battle of the Gains also partners with a non-profit, Gift of Life Michigan, that will be at the event raising awareness for organ donation and helping people in the community to become donors.
