Todd Fuhr and Tracy Fuhr, both 56, were walking southbound on the cross walk at the intersection of Grandville Avenue and Oakes Street at 11:13 p.m. Saturday night when they were struck and killed by a westbound vehicle that ran through a stop sign.
According to the Grand Rapids Police Department both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene by responding medical personnel and the vehicle fled the scene immediately following the accident.
Following a tip made to the GRPD on Sunday the vehicle suspected to be involved in the incident was located and a suspected driver was arrested.
On Monday, the GRPD Traffic Unit presented the case to the Kent County Prosecutor’s Office who authorized the charging of the suspect on two counts of Reckless Driving Causing Death and two counts of Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death While at Fault. Both are felonies with a maximum prison sentence of 15 years.
In a press release posted Monday afternoon on their Facebook page, the GRPD identified the suspect as a 44 year old resident of Grand Rapids. According to the press release “(The suspect) is expected to be arraigned in 61st District Court the afternoon of October 21st or the morning of October 22nd. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”
