A safe opportunity has arrived for local sports fans as Grand Rapids Community College decides to partner with Michigan Sports Radio in order to broadcast all of their Winter semester sporting events.
Sports fans have taken a heavy hit within the last year as the continued struggle to contain the spread of COVID-19 has pushed us all into new boundaries. Bleachers and sidelines have been left empty in countless stadiums and fields by order of health and wellness guidelines in order to keep our communities safe from this pandemic. Like many areas of our new lives in quarantine, how we conduct sporting events has had to adapt to new conditions.
For GRCC, this means utilizing a partnership with Michigan Sports Radio, giving Raiders fans a platform where they can watch and support GRCC sporting events straight from their devices. This partnership was created in hopes of creating an effective way to participate in these events without putting anyone at risk.
“The live stream has been going on for a couple years now and they broadcast every home volleyball game, men’s and women’s basketball game, and all the postseason games that we host,” said GRCC’s sports information director Ben Brown when asked if this partnership plan was to be used for future semesters. “All home games are streamed & broadcast live, then archived to our Youtube page for future views.”
This year, only basketball and volleyball will be streamed online, but Brown said, “Hopefully in future Michigan Sports Radio will be able to do baseball and softball.”
Sports fans can find live streams of sports by looking at the broadcasting schedule on the Michigan Sports Radio website or by visiting the GRCC Athletics Youtube page, where these games will be archived.
