The Grand Rapids Community College’s men’s golf team competed against 11 schools at the Heritage Hill Invite on Oct. 18-19, securing a fourth place finish overall with a score of 602 to close out the fall season.
“I think that we did an outstanding job,” said head coach John Forton. “There were 11 four-year school teams and our team shot 301 for both days for a 602 total. Being the only two-year school, I think that we did really well.”
Multiple redshirt-freshmen led the Raiders to their fourth place finish. Arie Jackman led the team with a score of 148, finishing 10th overall. Logan Templeton tied for 29th with 156, followed by Matt Denhartigh and true freshman Connor Oman who tied for 41st with a score of 163. Freshman Alex Taylor saw a better performance during the invite while tying for 12th overall (score of 149).
“The majority of the team performed very well, Alex Taylor shot 71 and 72, which really propelled our team to get fourth place overall,” Forton said.
With the fall season coming to an end, the Raiders will start to prepare for the spring season, where they had a lot of success last spring. They were undefeated in the regular season (6-0), won the Michigan Community College Athletic Association Championship, National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Region XII Championship, and finished 11th out of 19 teams in the national tournament.
“We’re the defending region and conference champion…” Forton said. “We have to try to maintain our titles. This winter we plan on conditioning and weight lifting to gear up for the spring.”
