After two weeks away from competition, the Grand Rapids Community College men’s golf team left a strong impression when they rolled into Centreville to compete in the Glen Oaks Community College Last Chance invitation on Oct. 7.
The Raiders performed extremely well with a finishing score of 297 and winning the invitation by beating Glen Oaks by more than 19 shots.
“… We were getting ready for some competition,” said GRCC’s head golf coach John Forton, noting that there were not a lot of teams at the event. ”But it was competitive golf and gets them back into the mindset of playing competitive golf again. They were excited to play again.”
With redshirt-freshmen Matt Denhartigh winning the tournament medal shooting 71 and Logan Templeton and David Courtright shooting 74 and making the all tournament team, GRCC dominated the competition.
Forton credited Denhartigh, Templeton, and Courtright for their performances.
Since the start of the season, the Raiders have been performing and placing extremely well in all their tournaments.
“They’ve done pretty well, winning the inaugural season event which was the Aquinas event,” Forton said. “They’re coming together as a team and after this season some of the players will be missed on the team, but today shows the potential of the players.”
The Raiders have just a couple more invites to finish off the season but they’re looking to end the season on a positive note.
Forton and the team expect the competition to be tough at the upcoming Taylor University Invite, as TU is No. 11 overall in the nation. The invite will be on Oct. 11-12 at Egypt Valley Golf Course and is set to commence at 10 a.m. on the first day.
