During the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations award ceremony, the Grand Rapids Community College communications department received top honors from a national college, as well as a communications and marketing organization for their excellence at their jobs.
The awards received were some of seven medallion awards granted to GRCC by the NCMPR, an organization that works with communication departments in community colleges throughout the Midwest and Ontario. One of the recipients of these awards was Elly Bainbridge, an education and promotion specialist at GRCC, who received the Communicator of the Year award from the organization.
GRCC Communications Director Dave Murray shed some light on the news and gave some of his thoughts regarding how this came to be and the excitement that came along with it.
“We got involved in NCMPR because these are our peers,” Murray said. “And they’re facing the same types of challenges that we are. So, we want to hear how they’re handling the situations, and maybe we can provide them some information to help them.”
By providing a sense of community with other community colleges, GRCC and other institutions could provide help to one another.
Being recognized is a good sign, and according to Murray, the objective of the department is to provide opportunities that can change the lives of both students and members of the community for the better.
Murray stated the awards won by the college is very encouraging to those involved.
“The most exciting part is that it reflects our opportunity in telling the story of our students and our programs here at GRCC,” he said. “We love doing that; we love highlighting the wonderful things that happen here.”
