Student Alliance discusses budgeting to wrap up October town hall meetings

Grand Rapids Community College Student Alliance discussed budgeting for all student clubs and organizations during a meeting on Oct. 21.

During the meeting, Student Alliance President Brendan Burke began by introducing himself and the other leaders of Student Alliance. Also in attendance were the Garden Club, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), Honors Society, Native American Student Organization and Student Life.

“If it (the expenditure) is greater than $1,000, it will first be voted through an E-Board, and then it will go to a town hall meeting through Student Alliance,” said Student Alliance Operations Director Brandon VanWyk. All funding requests are handled through the Student Alliance organization.

The fall semester’s current budget plans were discussed during the meeting, as well as a discussion of what funds were going where, and how much each club and/or organization was given based on need.

An individual attending the meeting raised a thoughtful point during open comments. The individual pointed out there was more funds allocated for travel expenditures than there was for the college’s food pantry. Funding can be challenged as all organizations and clubs are able to make proposals. 

Student Alliance will have another town hall meeting on Thursday, Nov. 4 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. to discuss the college’s veteran services.
