The Grand Rapids Community College volleyball team defeated Muskegon Community College, Thursday, Sept. 29, finishing out the first half of their conference schedule undefeated.

“After finishing undefeated in conference last year, it feels so good to be following the same path to start off the season,” said sophomore Audrey Torres.

The rival Jayhawks managed to take the second set, the first the Raiders have lost in over a month, but GRCC won the match 3-1 (26-24,18-25, 25-21, 25-21).

After being named MCCAA Northern Conference Defensive Player of the Week, redshirt sophomore Audrey Gower led the team with 32 digs and anchored a huge third set comeback from behind the service line.

“Audrey Gower is amazing,” Torres said. “She is so scrappy and saves us so much when our blocks are lacking or balls are taking weird deflections. She never lets a ball hit the floor without her body next to it.”

Torres took the lead for the Raider offense with 15 kills, redshirt sophomore Kara Hecht added 13 and sophomore Karrissa Ferry had 10.

Sophomore Eliza Thelen had eight blocks and Ferry added five, both career highs.

Shannon Russell would finish the match with 40 assists and 14 digs.

After a few early season losses to tough competition, GRCC has won 10 in a row.  Sitting at 10-2 on the season and first place in the MCCAA Northern Conference.

We can’t get too comfortable with where we stand right now,” Gower said.  “We have to keep working and competing in practice and during games to meet our end goals.”

The Raiders finally bring their win streak home this weekend for the annual Raider Invite, where they will host two games Saturday, at noon and 4 p.m., and two more Sunday, at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

“I think the whole team is pretty stoked to finally play on our own court in our own gym,” Gower said. “We have been on the road for so long, it feels good to get to compete at home… Playing at home is just a different atmosphere.”

Torres added, “The energy is different here, and we are all super excited for these four games. This winning streak isn’t going anywhere and we’re really looking forward to keeping it alive this weekend.”
