Golf season has begun and the Grand Rapids Community College golf team is getting ready for the upcoming matches.

The team, led by coach John Forton and assistant coach Mark Rasmussen, is hoping to finish off the season with a state title. Forton explains, however, that it will be difficult as they lost two of their star players from last year.

“It will make it a little bit more difficult,” Forton said. “Expectations went down a little bit but I still expect the guys to work hard and get back to the level where I think we should be.”

Forton hopes that the team captain and number one player, sophomore Conner Oman, along with number two player, freshman Drew Harrington, can lead the team with success. He expects them to do very well this season.

The toughest competition this season is going to be Mott Community College and Muskegon Community College, but Forton said he is confident his team will work hard.

The team competed in a tournament Friday, April 7,  at Swan Lake, where nationals will be held, which allowed them to get a preview of the courses. The team shot a one round score of 325, finishing third.

This past Friday they competed against Glen Oaks and finished first out of six. Harrington played well and finished with one under par.

“We are really going to have to work hard and outwork our competition to really make this a successful season,” Forton said.

Their next invitational is this upcoming Friday, April 21, at 10 am and they will take on Jackson College.
