The Grand Rapids Community College men’s golf team returned to action for the first time since Oct. 16 of last year, where the Raiders placed 10th out of 12 teams in the Lawrence Tech University Heritage Hill Collegiate in Shepherdsville, Kentucky. The tournament lasted from March 21 until March 23.
GRCC head coach John Forton was pleased with the team’s performance at the LTU Heritage Hill Collegiate,
“For our first competition of the year, I was pleased,” Forton stated in a GRCC press release. “We struggled with the short game due to a lack of practice, but I’m very confident that this group will excel once we can get some consistent practice time.”
The Raiders are led by two returners from last year’s roster, sophomore’s Ty Marchlewski and Drew Harrington. Other notable returners include sophomore’s Jayson Bultman, Hunter Schuiling, McCoy DenHartigh, and Zach Basiaga.
Marchlewski (76-74-79) and Harrington (77-73-79) tied for the best score on the team as they both shot a 229 which was good for 24th place. Both golfers finished with seven birdies and one eagle each.
GRCC totaled 34 birdies during the tournament and two eagles. Schuiling (78-82-81) and Bultman (77-83-82) finished 47th and 48th out of 69 total golfers.
DenHartigh (82-83-87), Basiaga (84-88-84), freshmen Brady Doyle (86-85-87) and Evan Kaiser (86-88-88) round out the remaining GRCC golfers.
GRCC is back in action on April 5 at the Marian University-Ancilla Invitational located in Indiana.
