Students at Grand Rapids Community College received a public safety advisory to their emails on Nov. 7 at 4:24 p.m. encouraging them to “take extra precautions to secure personal property” amidst an increase of campus larcenies.

According to the GRCC Police Department daily crime log, five larcenies have taken place since Nov. 4. Two of the larcenies took place in Ramp B and the remaining three occurred in the Ford Fieldhouse, Student Center and Sneden Hall.

The Collegiate was unable to get more information on the larcenies Thursday afternoon. Before the advisory was sent, a reporter went to the police department around 2:30 p.m. and requested recent police reports but was told none were available.

The email encourages students to lock their vehicles in the parking ramps and nearby campus to avoid losing valuables.

“Never leave valuables in plain sight, such as wallets, phones, backpacks, briefcases, cash or electronics,” the email states.

Students have also been advised to secure belongings in the Ford Fieldhouse with a padlock.

The last point of guidance in the email was to stay vigilant.

“Be mindful of your surroundings at all times. Never leave your belongings unattended, even for a moment, such as when stepping away to use the restroom, visiting a vending machine, or printing documents.”
