In the second game of GRCC’s basketball conference doubleheader road trip to Lake Michigan College, the men’s team lost 86-101. Defense and foul trouble were the difference as GRCC had a season high of 27 turnovers along with sending the opposing Redhawks to the line 41 times.
GRCC trailed by 12 early in the second half but were able to compile a 20-7 run punctuated by a Nate Kiel three to put the Raiders in front 63-62. The lead would exchange hands three more times before LMC would pull away for good in the last seven minutes of the game.
The Raiders offense was led by sophomore Nate Kiel, who had the most points for either team, scoring a career high 31 points. Kiel was 12-21 from the field and made 5 three-pointers. Sophomore Mathew Richards recorded his second straight double-double, scoring 15 points and getting a game-high 14 rebounds.
Despite these heroics, GRCC falls to 15-6 overall and 5-2 in conference play. The Raiders hope to regroup on Wednesday, Feb. 4, as they will face conference opponent Kellogg Community College in the second game of a home doubleheader. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. while the Women’s contest will begin at 5:00 p.m. at the GRCC Fieldhouse.
