Grand Rapids Community College men’s basketball team remained at the top of the Michigan Community College Athletic Association Western Conference with a 100-83 victory against Lake Michigan College.

GRCC reached the 100-point mark for the seventh time this season, but despite the final score, securing the win was not an easy feat. LMC led by as many as 16 points in the first half before the Raiders closed the deficit to trail just 41-44 at the break.

The entertaining second half featured five lead changes, but eventually the Raiders defensive pressure and strong offensive half, would help them begin to pull away. Head coach Joe Fox praised his team’s composure following a lackluster first half.

“We really defended well, especially in the second half,” Fox said. “Great patience on the offensive end as well.”

Six Raiders scored in double figures, led by Sophomore Wing Nate Keil’s 20 points off 6-11 shooting. Freshman Guard E.J. Bowman chipped in 18 points including four 3-pointers, Sophomore Forward Matt Richards recorded 17 points and a game high 13 rebounds for his fourth straight double-double. Sophomore Guard Tyran Thomas finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Freshman Wing Jared Demoff recorded 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three blocks.

Sitting atop of the conference and well into the back half of the season, maintaining consistency and an upward trajectory heading into tournament play is essential. But coach Fox isn’t looking too far ahead.

“We’re just taking it one day at a time,” Fox said. “Had a good night tonight, but we have another game coming up and we’re going to prepare and do our best in that game.”

The Raiders will look to keep their consistent play going on the road against Southwestern Michigan College on Wednesday, Feb. 11, with tipoff at 7:30 p.m.
