On Friday, July 24, at 5:19 p.m., a student walked into the Grand Rapids Community College Police Department building to request aid in retrieving his belongings from his residence and delivering them to Motel 6 on Plainfield Avenue. The student told officers that he had been physically assaulted that morning by his younger brother and sister, but told the officers that he didn’t wish to press charges and only wanted to collect his things and leave for Motel 6. He further told the officers that he didn’t believe that the assault was related to his gender or sexual orientation, but that he had been criticized for his lifestyle choices by his family in the past. He also told the officers that he was seeking aid from Veteran Services at GRCC. Officers were able to prepare the student a care package of food from the GRCC Food Pantry and were able to help him collect his things and arrive at the Motel 6 without incident.
Flasher at Bostwick Ave
On Thursday, July 30 at 10:39 a.m., an officer was flagged down by a Van Andel Institute employee near the intersection of Crescent Street and Division Avenue to inform the officer that a woman was walking down Division flashing her genitals, while the VAI had a day camp for children in session. He described the woman as having brown hair, dressed in a black and white polka dot dress and flip-flops. GRCC PD and the Grand Rapids Police Department both attempted to locate the woman but were unable to do so.
Graffiti found in RJF bathroom
On Friday, July 31, at 10:09 a.m., an officer was on patrol through Raleigh J. Finkelstein Hall’s fourth floor when he noticed some graffiti in the men’s restroom. The graffiti was blue and said “LARB.” The officer informed a GRCC employee of the damage so it could be cleaned up.
Trespassers ejected from Parking Ramp A
On Monday, Aug. 3, at 6:29 a.m., an officer was on patrol when he noticed three individuals asleep in the sixth-level stairwell of Parking Ramp A. He and another officer interviewed the three, two of whom the officer recognized from previous trespassing incidents, with none of the three being students. The first suspect, a woman, was interviewed by the officer, who informed her that he recognized her from a trespassing incident back on June 17. The woman said she remembered the interaction, and the officer informed her that she would be given a trespassing citation. The woman then left GRCC property heading southbound. The second suspect was also given a trespassing citation and left in the same direction. The third suspect had not trespassed before and was thus given a warning. The man proceeded to argue with police over this, asking why the doors were not locked if they were off limits, and was told it was so that students could use the stairwell if they parked in the ramp. The man would eventually head to the elevator and also leave the premises.
Trespassing at parking ramp
On Monday, Aug. 3 at 8:17 a.m., an officer was on patrol of Parking Ramp A’s fourth level when he noticed two individuals, and it appeared that the female was giving the male oral sex, with the scent of marijuana in the air. However, upon interviewing the two, both denied this, with the male standing up and pointing to his crotch to show the officer that his pants were pulled up, with both also denying that they had been smoking marijuana. Both had previously been caught trespassing on July 8, and as a result, they were both given trespassing citations, with them leaving without further incident.
Charging table defaced
On Monday, Aug. 3 at 10:18 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the solar charging tables outside the South Bostwick Commons on a report of malicious destruction of property. Upon arriving, the officer noticed multiple sources of damage, including engravings and blue paint on the seat. The officer asked a GRCC employee to help determine what damage was new. The employee pointed to three new sources of damage; a notch was cut out of the top corner, and there were two engravings carved into the table. One read “OZZY” and appeared to be the logo of singer Ozzy Osbourne; the other was the letter M with an extended tail, not unlike a logo used by the band Metallica. There are no suspects at this time for the graffiti.
Theft from GRCC Rec Center
On Tuesday, Aug. 11 at 6:15 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the GRCC Recreation Center on a report of a stolen laptop. The officer arrived and met with a GRCC employee at the turf-level desk who told him that the theft happened sometime between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. the previous day. She also showed the officer where the laptop was stolen from, which she had noticed that morning. She noted to the officer how a plastic piece was sheared off and broken from where a security cable was locked into the computer. She said that it was present at least until 2 p.m. the previous day when the last student worker was using it. The officer asked if anyone else had access to the area or laptop, and the woman told him that only student workers and athletic staff have access and that there was no student worker scheduled after 2 p.m. The price of the laptop is valued at $893.00, and there are no suspects at this time.
