On Aug. 7, the ARTS club at Grand Rapids Community College completed their first mural. The ecosystem-themed artwork is located in the Student Life office at the Student Center and is open for all to see.
Spencer Caldwell, the founder of the ARTS club, said he thinks about 24 hours of work a week have been put into this mural since July 14.
“I’ve been showing up here pretty consistently,” Caldwell said, “from 9 to 5 about three days a week, and other people will come in as they can.”
An Illustration major at GRCC, Oliver Salgadl, expressed happiness after getting this long-awaited project done. His design was the one that ended up being selected for the final project.
“I think it’s really cool to have something permanent at GRCC,” SalgadI said.
Goat O’caromaody also said he is excited to contribute to this project. He mentioned feeling fulfilled and explained always wanting to do a big project like this.
“Being able to show off my artistic abilities to possibly generations to come is very important to me,” he said.
While there are no solid plans for their next mural, Caldwell said they are actively trying to make more murals at GRCC a reality. The club also encourages fellow students to take part in their meetings and projects. The ARTS club meets once a week, and the meetings are open to all students, no matter how experienced. The location for the weekly meetings will be determined after GRCC’s Block party on Aug. 24.
