On Saturday, Aug. 24, Grand Rapids Community College is set to host its annual block party for incoming and returning students. This year the party will take place both outdoors and indoors on GRCC’s main campus.
The event will allow students time to get acclimated with the campus and become more familiar with the college. Lori Cook, the Associate Dean of Access and First Year Success says this is a perfect time to figure out how parking works and how to drive in the city.
“A lot of students have never come downtown before or certainly driven (there),” said Cook. “The student block party is an excellent time to do that, so you’re not flustered on the first day.”
New students can expect to receive a welcome packet and the opportunity to get a RaiderCard, textbooks and speak with any resources they might need. Student organizations and academic will be located in the Ford Fieldhouse while the campus activities board hosts carnival style games outside in the Juan Olivarez plaza.
Ashley Fox, the Assistant Director of Student Life and Conduct, is looking forward to the event. She explained that there is so much potential at this event every year, and invites students to come out and be a part of the fun.
“The more the merrier, if you are a new student or a returning student,” Fox said. “I think this is something super fun to come down to campus for with friends and family.
Free food will be provided, a food truck will be serving tacos outside and walking tacos will be available indoors. Along with that, there will be a free t-shirt for each student.
The Collegiate will have a booth in the field house. Students can stop by the booth to create a DIY planner and talk to current members of the publication.
