Undeniably, Christmas is the time of year for untamed joy and cheer… Until that one bothersome Christmas jingle comes on to ruin the mood. This season, The Collegiate took on finding out which popular ballads are actually not-so-popular among the students of Grand Rapids Community College.
It quickly became clear that for the majority of GRCC students, all they want for Christmas is for Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” to stop playing.
“It is actually a good song – well made…,” said student Hailey Seitler, 19. “It’s just so annoying and overplayed.”
Many other students think that it is an overplayed tune, as Estephanie Villeda, 20, agreed. Villeda works at a grocery store nearby, and shared that “it’s always playing at work… Literally every 30 minutes!”
It also turned out that “Last Christmas” by Wham! is high on the list of seasonal least favorites. As Gabriella Schroeder, 19, put it, “it’s got that thing about it where it just sticks in your head for way too long… I hear it once and it just lingers.”
Schroeder was certainly not alone in this, as many students attested to the same dislike.
Nearly leveled with the amount of dislike against Wham!, the classic carol “12 Days of Christmas” was up there with the most avoided songs. Second-year student Oleg Nshungu said that “it’s so repetitive”, and it’s hard to argue with him there. Afterall, as a true cumulative song, it repeats the first two lines twelve times in only a few minutes of duration.
“When it comes on I’m just kind of like ‘oh come on!’” Nshungu emphasized.
There we have it, the three most disliked jingles of the Christmas season this year. Of course, among these responses there’s many more opinions to go around. Some of these titles could be your favorite, or maybe there’s a song unnamed that just grinds your sleigh gears.
Whatever it may be, The Collegiate wishes you a merry snow season – with your favorite holiday soundtrack.
