Medical Incident at ATC building
On Thursday, Nov. 14 at 11:03 a.m., a Grand Rapids Community College Police Department officer was dispatched to room 106 in the Applied Technology Center. A student cut their finger while taking a culinary class. Upon arrival, the student’s finger was already bandaged, and the student explained they cut their thumb while cutting vegetables. The student said they needed no further assistance.
Ankle Injury at the Science building
A GRCCPD officer responded to a report of a medical injury at the Calkins Science building. When the officer met the employee that was injured at the science building, she was sitting on a chair and icing their right ankle. The employee explained she was taking out the trash, when she saw a person walking in front of her. The trash bin then swung around the corner, and in an effort to stop it from rolling down the hill and hitting the person, the employee attempted to stop it, and rolled her ankle and fell. It was swollen and her right knee was scraped up.
Police intervene in AI dispute between parent and professor
On Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 4:07 p.m. an officer was dispatched to room 400 at the College Park Plaza on GRCC’s main campus. The officer spoke with a GRCC employee, who played a voicemail of the person she was having trouble with.
In the voicemail, a parent of a GRCC student complained about an email her daughter received, which stated there was A.I usage detected on her entrance exam. The GRCC employee explained to the officer that it was protocol for the English department when A.I was detected. At 4:37 p.m. the officer called the parent to try and de-escalate the situation, the parent continued to hold forth to the officer and went on to threaten taking legal action. At 4:49 p.m. the officer received a call from someone who stated they were the student’s father, he asked what was going on. The officer explained the situation to the father and stated that his daughter must get in contact with the English department to resolve the issue. The father stated his daughter already called, and they would wait for a response from the department.
Trespassing in Ramp B
At 6:05 a.m. on Nov. 21, an officer responded to a larceny complaint in Parking Ramp B. An individual under the influence called from an emergency call box, stating their backpack had been stolen. Upon arrival, officers met with the man, who continued to complain about a stolen backpack, which contained several important documents, including personal identification. The individual said while drunk, he had been jumped the night prior outside the homeless shelter, and entered the parking ramp to keep warm, and now cannot find his backpack. The officer contacted the custodians that work in the parking ramp, and they said they did not come across a backpack. The man became agitated, and asked officers to call GRPD. The officers refused and gave the man a verbal warning for trespassing and suggested he visit their department to report the fight that occurred the night prior. The man left campus property after the interaction. After looking over camera footage, the man entered the parking ramp at 5:09 a.m., and did not have a backpack on him.
Suspicious person reported at RJF
Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 9:50 a.m. a student came to GRCCPD to file a report regarding a panhandler. She stated at around 9:25 a.m. a man she described as an approximately 30-year-old Black male, thin, with black hair, wearing a dark sweatshirt and blue jeans, approached her and asked her to “shake her a** for some change” and told her she was looking good. The student ignored him and kept walking into the Raleigh J. Finkelstein building. The officer checked the area, and was unable to locate the suspect. Later, on Nov. 20, at about 9:15 a.m. the man was reported on level G-2 in the RJF building. Upon arrival, dispatch noticed the man had been arrested a few days prior due to warrants. Officers told the man he was trespassing, and he told them he was just warming up his food and he just came from the Enrollment Center after attempting to enroll in classes. Officers escorted the man back to the Enrollment Center, and the front desk confirmed the man tried to register for classes, and needed to take further testing. The man then asked officers if he could take something from the food pantry, and they granted his request. After that, they spoke with him about the report filed against him from the day before, he denied ever being involved with the victim. Officers verbally warned him for trespassing, and advised him to stay off campus unless he was conducting official business. The man then left campus.
Person needing assistance at Sneden hall
At 9:34 a.m. on Nov. 21, an officer was dispatched to the cafeteria in Sneden Hall, where officers were told an individual was suicidal. The officer recognized the individual from a similar past incident in April 2024. When the officer arrived, she was sitting on the ground, upset and crying. The officer had a conversation with her, in which she confessed to wanting to commit suicide, and said she thinks she is going to be homeless and lose her job. The officer asked if she was currently seeing a counselor, to which she responded no. The officer then offered to give her a ride to Network 180, a Behavioral Health Crisis Center in Grand Rapids, to get her necessary resources. Eventually, she was escorted to Network 180.
