There was an aggravated assault on Grand Rapids Community College’s Main Campus at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 5 in the 100 block of Ransom Avenue NE.
According to GRCC Police Captain Tony Myers, one person involved in the incident is a GRCC student.
GRCC Police and Grand Rapids Police responded to the incident according to a Timely Warning Notice sent to GRCC students and staff via email through GRCC Alert. “The incident appears to have involved mutual combatants, and is believed to be isolated,” the alert stated.
Wednesday’s incident is under investigation and Capt. Myers said further information cannot be disclosed at this time.
Jennifer Kalczuk, the Public Information Officer for the Grand Rapids Police Department responded to an email sent yesterday inquiring about the incident, saying, “This incident started as a verbal exchange that escalated into a physical assault. There was one arrest made and assault charges have been approved.”
The alert sent to the campus community included safety tips including reminders to stay alert to surroundings, trust their instincts, plan ahead for safe walking routes, avoid distractions while walking, and use the ‘buddy system’ or call GRCC PD for a safety escort via their non-emergency number: 616-234-4010. The alert also recommended that students and staff add the GRCC Police emergency phone number – 616-234-4911 – to their contacts for quick access in case of an emergency. The alert urges students and staff to report any suspicious behavior immediately and move to a safe location.
