From Jan. 22-24, Grand Rapids Community College’s Theater Department invites audiences to spend an evening witnessing Matthew McLachlan’s debut full-length play, “Orion.”

The story follows protagonists, Sam (Ian Santoyo) and Gwen (Grace Lefleur), as they wade in the unfamiliar waters of an important relationship coming to an unexpected end. As Sam’s friends, Abby (Kiera Zittel) and Scott (Cyrus Geysbeek), support him through his breakup he quickly learns that everyone takes “moving on” at their own pace. Stuck between grieving and growing, Sam is left to confront the realization that sometimes relationship dynamics have to adapt into something entirely new as they venture further into adulthood.

Saying goodbye to loved ones and releasing expectations is rarely easy for anyone, especially young adults who’ve not yet had a ton of practice. It can feel like quitting, or admitting defeat. However, the story of “Orion” asks audiences to look beyond what you think you know about classic break-up tales. Rather than all drama, all heartache, the play intends to shine a light on how we move forward after loss, as well as the complex nature of love and the sacrifices we make in the name of it.

When addressing GRCC’s communications department, manager of Spectrum Theater, Jonathan Wheeler, remarked, “We chose Orion because it encourages critical thinking from both students and the audience…This production focuses on the gray areas in relationships. Rather than offering clear answers, it examines how we respond when life doesn’t unfold the way we imagine and then what it means to adapt, resist or let go.”

The show will run from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. and take place at the Spectrum Theater, Lab Theater, in Room 201. Limited seating will be available, so plan accordingly. The general public can expect to pay $18 per ticket, but for GRCC faculty and staff, that price goes down to $12. Meanwhile, GRCC students can snag their tickets for only $5 here, or by calling (616) 234-3946.
