The Collegiate’s weekly brief: February 16 through February 21

There are a total of 15 events happening at Grand Rapids Community College during the week of Feb.16-21. With events spanning from guest speakers to dances, this week is not one to miss at GRCC. Read on to find out where to find free food and free stuff on campus this week:

Tuesday, Feb. 17:

9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Bio Medical Club is hosting guest speaker Dr. Estibaliz Mujika, a local neuroscientist, to talk about her career and her research with the Van Andel Institute of Medicine. The lecture will be in room 219 of the Applied Technology Center. 

10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Student Government and Center for Student Life and Leadership is hosting “Gov Day” in the Student Life Hub of the Student Center building. Students are invited to learn more about Student Government positions as they interact with student leaders. Student Government is looking for new members for the upcoming summer semester. There will be both free food and free stuff. 

11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Student Retention Services, in partnership with the Academic Advising and Transfer Center, is holding a “Mid-Term Relaxer” event on the third floor of the Student Center. There will be crafts, snacks, and 15-minute workshops led by the Academic Advising and Transfer Center. At noon, the workshop theme is called “Healthy Habits.” At 1:30 p.m., the theme is “Test Taking/Anxiety.” Lastly, at 2:30 p.m., the workshop is covering “Study Skills.” Students will have the opportunity to paint on canvas bags, and are invited to bring other things to paint on, like jeans or shoes. There will be free food and free stuff at the event. 

4 to 5 p.m. Rotaract Club is hosting a guest speaker event featuring Benjamin Sommers, a physician assistant based out of Grand Rapids. Sommers will share experiences in getting his bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences from Valparaiso University, along with his career path and time in the medical field. Students will leave the event with a new perspective on health sciences, medicine, and professional development. The lecture will be held at the Applied Technology Center in room 219. There is also the option to join virtually via Zoom. There will be free food for those in attendance. 

4:30 to 6 p.m. Student Government invites students to participate in “Putt Putt with the President,” on the third floor of the Student Center, where students can play western-themed putt putt golf with Interim President Triezenberg. There will be free food, merchandise, and a photobooth.

Wednesday, Feb. 18: 

12 to 1 p.m. The Center for Career and Professional Readiness is holding “Scams and Frauds” as part of their Financial Literacy Event series in partnership with Arbor Financial Credit Union. The workshop will be held in RJF 207. The event can also be attended online, with the code to join via Zoom on the event’s poster found on RaiderConnect. Free food will be provided to those in attendance. 

12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The Center for Counseling and Well-Being is hosting “Snooze You Win: Mastering Sleep in College,” as part of their Well-Being Workshop series, sharing information on the importance of sleep and how to promote healthy sleeping habits at the Raider Grill (room 205 of the Student Center). There will be free food and parking passes. 

2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Foreign Affairs Club is hosting its weekly meeting in room 206 of Sneden Hall at the Devos Campus. 

Thursday, Feb. 19:

11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Bob and Alecia Woodrick Center for Inclusion and Multicultural Affairs will be hosting a day-long “Alum Artist Highlight & Student Showcase”, inviting students, staff, and community members to engage with the power of expression as a reflection of Black history, culture, and creativity for Black History Month. Guests are welcome to stop in anytime throughout the event to interact with artists and explore the exhibits. Light refreshments will be provided in the early session, followed by a live jazz performance in the afternoon to complement the experience. 

3 to 6 p.m. Financial Aid is hosting “Financial Aid Frenzy – Lakeshore,” where students can get hands-on support from the Financial Aid department in completing their FAFSA for the 2026-2027 school year. Work alone or in a group on each step of the FAFSA, and learn about scholarships and payment options. The event will be held at the Lakeshore Campus, located in Holland. There will be free stuff for students. 

4 to 5:30 p.m. Campus Activities Board and Student Government are holding their February “Student Leaders Town Hall” in Raleigh J Finkelstein Hall, room 108, where students have the opportunity to ask questions and share their ideas with the student leaders. There will be free food and free stuff for those in attendance. 

Friday, Feb. 20:

3:30 to 4 p.m. Cinema Society is holding its first meeting in room 219 of the ATC. Show up to learn about the plans and goals of the club going forward. Students are encouraged to come with ideas for what they would like to see this semester. 

3 to 5 p.m. Raider Nation Gaming is holding its weekly meeting in room 218 of Cook Hall. Show up to play games of all sorts– from video games to board games– and hang out with fellow gamers. 

7 to 10 p.m. Campus Activities Board is hosting “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” at Secchia Piazza, room 151, of the ATC. Students are invited to show up for a western-themed night complete with line dancing, food, crafts, and other activities. The event is free for students, and each student can bring one non-student guest for free.  

Saturday, Feb. 21: 

1 p.m. GRCC Men’s Basketball is playing against Kalamazoo Valley Community College at GRCC’s Ford Fieldhouse. The game will be livestreamed on GRCC Athletics’ YouTube channel. All GRCC students and staff are admitted to home contests for free with a valid RaiderCard.
